Hungry children are more susceptible to illnesses and behavior problems
In 2009, 27,485 people ate a meal prepared from an emergency food box. They received this assistance from one of CPFBs member agencies. All who qualify for emergency assistance are within 130% of the federal poverty level.
Seniors have to choose between medication and food
Oregon ranked #2 in the nation for high percentage of hungry citizens
Included in this number were:
-children under the age of 18
-people who are vulnerable, including seniors and the disabled
-working people whose income is not sufficient enough to cover the basic necessities
-the unemployed-almost 13% (and growing) in Columbia County
Oregon unemployment rate is 11% and growing
in October 2008, the United States reached its highest unemployment level in 14 years
